After working on my freelance projects and other portfolio pieces I decided to revisit the Gundam Strike model and bring it up to date. I had learned a lot of new skills and techniques, so I applied them in updating this project. I wanted to create a more realistic battle-worn look, without sacrificing the strong colours and textures of the original animated series. First of all, the geometry was reworked to ensure better polygon flow and placing. Smoothing groups were then applied and turbosmooth modifiers used to smooth out any curved edges. I then UV mapped the whole model and combined each object's texture coordinates into one image. I then used this to make a decal map and a damage mask. The damage mask was then set to blend between the coloured paintwork and the bare metal underneath. I finished the whole process by using a new lighting system and ambient occlusion pass.
